Getting Started with Teaching Game Design

#sxsw #scratch

Iap20806

In this presentation, we will show some beginning basics to get you started, give student examples, and show how Scratch can be applied across the curriculum. You will discover how to get students interested in basic game programming and design and get them involved in animation, drawing, interactive art, games, math, music, simulations, and even a possible contest. While this presentation will only "Scratch" the basics, it will leave you and your students scratching for more.
Scratch is a free programming language developed by and made available through MIT. What makes Scratch unique is the way it allows students to easily create their own interactive stories, animations, games, music, and art. Best of all, they can share their creations on the worldwide web, collaborate with others as they create, share, remix, and recreate! Scratch certainly goes beyond STEM by bringing in just about anything.

This SXSW Gaming Session at the Long Center is FREE and open to the public. However SXSW Interactive, Film, Gold and Platinum badges gain priority seating.

A little more about Todd:

Todd began his journey in education as a music teacher with a degree in K-12 Music Ed from Southwest Texas State. Todd plays the guitar but designed and taught music classes in San Antonio in schools that had no music programs.

Todd went on to develop a strong technology program and curriculum in Austin. During that time, Todd completed a Master of Science degree in Computer Education and Cognitive Systems from the University of North Texas via an online distributed learning cohort.

Todd spent several years building network database programs to collect a variety of student instructional data and played a leading role in school success initiatives. He has managed both local and state assessments at a district-wide level and developed online methods of delivering "just-in-time" professional development.

Todd's passion has always been with technology education. He has developed classes that teach students how to create and interact with various aspects of games, particularly level maps, and has led committees to develop an aligned and integrated curriculum. In addition, Todd completed a Master of Education Administration degree and is working to build positive and productive pathways for district leaders to understand best practices in technology initiatives.
