The Humor-Centered Design Process

Designers who attend this workshop will learn:
- Strategies and principles for designing with humor;
- Methods for designing a humorous product or experience;
- How humor fits into the various stages of the user-centered design process.
The workshop will be a fun mash-up of presentation, video clips, improv exercises, co-design and sketching.
The first half-hour: A general introduction to user experience design with humor as an approach.
The second half-hour: We'll introduce and run through an improv exercise or two.
--Then we take a 15 minute break.
The second hour: We'll do some co-design activities interfused with improv activities, showing the similarities and methodologies of both.
--Then we take a 15 minute break.
The third hour: We'll watch some inspirational clips and view some inspirational humorous products and experiences. We'll finish up our prototypes.
--We'll do a quick improv wrap-up round, then we'll talk about what we've learned and anything else!
Prerequisites:
- Attendees should have a familiarity with and some basic knowledge of user-centered design and its process(es), and should have an interest in collaborative design methods.
What to Bring:
- A pen and sketchpad or notebook is recommended for the workshop, but is optional.
Presenters
Chelsey Delaney
UX Designer
Catalyst Group
Chelsey is a User Experience Consultant at Catalyst Group, as well as an outspoken humor studies researcher and designer.
She’s spoken about and given workshops on the topic of humor design at Ignite!, SXSW Interactive, LeanUX NYC, and humor research conferences.
Chelsey is an outspoken advocate for getting at the essence and truth of an experience, and believes strategic use of humor in design is a magnificent way to achieve that feat. Her experience as a designer has focused primarily in the areas of health care, specifically women’s reproductive health care.
She enjoys hip hop, storytelling, tacos, arbitrary art projects, and sleep. She doesn’t enjoy politics, but she is obsessed with it.
Chelsey received a bachelor’s degree in multimedia journalism from the University of Texas at Austin, and received a master’s of design degree from Carnegie Mellon University.
Chris Trew
Comedian/Improv Teacher
The New Movement Theater
Chris Trew is a comedian, professional wrestling manager and Creative Director of The New Movement - a comedy venue and training center with locations in Austin and New Orleans. He tours the country performing standup, improv and sketch comedy and hosting the Air Sex Championships.
Chris has done fun stuff like perform at all of the comedy festivals in the world but he's also done questionable things like appear on America's Got Talent and The Bad Girls Club. Chris has a popular podcast, Trew 2 the Game, that covers New Orleans sports every Tuesday.
