Mike Woolf
Dir
Beef & Pie Productions
I started Beef and Pie Productions 15 years ago with DP Andrew Yates and Producer Karen Yates. Together we've worked to find a balance between making a living and making documentaries. We've been paying our bills by directing commercials for the likes of Southwest Airlines, US Air Force, CPS Energy and a whole host of others. But our passion lies in making documentaries.
We've premiered four documentary shorts here at SXSW: Growin' a Beard, The 72oz Steak, The Tuesday Nighter and Life is Marbleous.. In 2010 we premiered our feature about Richard Garriott becoming the first son of an astronaut to go to space - Man on a Mission. It won an award for Best Documentary.
Our filmmaking has influenced our commercial work and visa versa. Some examples: we have always shot with a small crew, we brought editorial in house early on and we have always invested in our own equipment. This mentality has made it possible for us to deliver to our commercial clients national-level work for 'regional-level' budgets.
It's also given us the freedom to explore the subject matter we find most interesting. We're seeing more and more opportunities to make it possible to not be a starving filmmaker!
