Distribution of Income in a Streaming Economy

The Norwegian digital music market is the world’s most advanced, with a 78 % digital market share of recorded music. Most artists and labels regard streaming as positive and that substantial revenues are being generated, yet some still raise concerns about the current settlement model’s ability to sustain local music, smaller niches and more ‘complex’ music.
Clouds & Concerts, a research project at the University of Oslo, presents the results of a study comparing two different settlement models based on anonymized user data from music streaming service WiMP. The panel will then discuss what a new settlement model could mean for the fan-artists relation, development of new talent, and long-term legitimacy of streaming services.
