The US and UK governments have put open data at the heart of current health reforms. In both countries, transparency has become a focal point for improvements in clinical quality and the cost effectiveness of services. This session is led by two of the architects of this transatlantic Big Data revolution - Greg Downing, Executive Director for Innovation at HHS, and Beverely Bryant, Director of Strategic Systems and Technology at NHS England - who argue that transparency has the power to transform patient outcomes, drive digital innovation and create unprecedented opportunities for science and economic growth. They will describe plans to release vast amounts of new data and how they propose to make this easy to access for entrepreneurs, patients and professionals. Beverley Bryant

Dir of Strategic Systems & Technology

NHS England

Beverley is the Director of Strategic Systems and Technology for NHS England. Her role is to set the national direction for NHS technology and informatics and stimulate technology leadership and innovation across the NHS in England. She is the SRO for a number of NHS England commitments including Integrated Digital Care Records, NHS E-referrals, Patient Online and Electronic Prescriptions. Prior to joining NHS England she was Managing Director of Health at Capita. She has undertaken various change, performance improvement and operational roles in big-five consulting companies, Department of Health and the NHS and her most notable achievement was the creation of NHS Choices in 2007. Her background expertise includes over 12 years of IT-enabled change in roles that include business and systems analysis and technical design authority.

Gregory Downing

Exec Dir for Innovation in the Immediate Office

Gregory Downing, D.O., Ph.D. is the Executive Director for Innovation in the Immediate Office of the Secretary at the United States Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). In this role he helps promote innovation and entrepreneurship activities across HHS. In addition, he supports open government activities through uses of technology and data to promote improvement in health and health care. Since 2009, he has led the Health Data Initiative at HHS advocating for the liberation and creative use of data to support innovation. His work has been instrumental in the establishment of the Health Data Consortium, a non-profit, multi-stakeholder organization that promotes data transparency, research, and entrepreneurship, in support of health care transformation. Prior to his move to HHS in 2006, Dr. Downing served at the National Institutes of Health since 1993 in research, policy, and program management roles. Dr. Downing earned his medical degree from Michigan State University and his Ph.D. in pharmacology from the University of Kansas.
