We heard from Acting Under Secretary of Arms Control and International Security Rose Gottemoeller at SxSW Interactive 2013, on the significant value placed on bringing citizens both in the US and globally, into the work of defining new ways of using technology and communities to reduce the global stockpile of nuclear, chemical, biological and conventional weapons. Dr. Brian Nordmann, Director of the Office of Verification and Transparency Technologies in the Bureau of Arms Control, Verification and Compliance at the U.S. State Department, will describe the types of capabilities and tools currently being sought to bring new approaches into the job of verifying historically significant treaties such as START, New START and others. He will cover a recent open challenge on “What Information Technology Tools and Concepts Can Support Future Arms Control Inspections?”, as well as discuss other ideas under consideration. Dr. Brian D. Nordmann is the Director of the Office of Verification and Transparency Technologies in the Bureau of Arms Control, Verification and Compliance at the U.S. Department of State. His Bureau’s overall mission is the control, reduction, and eventual elimination of all weapons of mass destruction worldwide and his Office oversees the development of the technologies necessary to monitor and eliminate such weapons. He has nearly twenty-five years experience at the Department in a number of positions and has worked throughout the U.S., Europe, the Mideast, and North Africa. He has also worked as a radio announcer, a stand-up comedian, an old-timey musician, a horse wrangler, and as the world’s worst door-to-door vacuum cleaner salesman.
