In March 2011 Thomas Calder, at age 20, gathered all the gear he could find and recorded an album in his Brisbane home. It took all of 2 ½ weeks. Even the most cursory airing of that striking debut will leave the listener with no doubt: The Trouble with Templeton is special.

It was a huge 12 months for Thomas with rave reviews for his debut album from press & blogs all over Australia, high rotation for “I Wrote A Novel” on community radio nationally including Triple J, the song reaching #8 on the Australian Independent Radio Chart, and all his videos (made by Thomas and his brother, Josh) had a huge response from blogs, and play on national TV in Australia.

Then in mid 2012, the act made a stunning transformation – from a 1-piece to a 5-piece band. This review of their recent Big Sound performance describes the transformation perfectly: “Once the solo project for the spare acoustic stylings of Thomas Calder, The Trouble With Templeton are now a newly-minted five-piece that makes the most of their cinematic influences and darker, storytelling lineage…Playing with tight fervour, their set is characterised by building moods and the textural atmospherics of the UK’s Elbow and US heartbreakers The National. In September 2012 the single “Six Months In A Cast” (to be released in the US later this year) was ITunes Single of the Week in Australia, and reached #4 on the AIR Independent Radio Chart.

A special US-only “I Wrote A Novel” EP was released and serviced to College Radio and debuted at #18 Most Added on the CMJ Chart 23/8/12 and received radio play across the US. Thomas Calder travelled to the US in October 2012 and played packed out solo shows for Filter Magazine’s “Culture Collide” Festival in Echo Park, LA, the “CMJ Music Marathon” in NY, and a swathe of private showcases at some of the biggest movie studios in the world. It was an incredibly fruitful trip, he received rave reviews, and a very exciting buzz has started to grow for Templeton in the US. Filter Magazine reviewed that show: "When we walked in the room, it instantly became clear that The Trouble with Templeton was there to win you over. From the first chord, he commanded everyone's attention, so much so that you often found yourself forgetting to breathe. Couples were holding each other and those standing alone were swaying from left to right. Needless to say, we cannot wait to see him again."

The Trouble With Templeton were recently announced as Triple J’s Harvest Festival Unearthed Winners, and will play the festival in November alongside the likes of Sigur Ros, Grizzly Bear and Beck, and the band were added to the bill for the legendary Falls Festival in Lorne, Victoria. They will be playing the main stage on 29th December, alongside Beach House, Two Door Cinema Club, Hot Chip & The Flaming Lips.

The band will also headline the “Communion Music Night” in Melbourne in November. The night started in London in 2006, established by Ben Lovett (Mumford and Sons), Kevin Jones and producer Ian Grimble, featuring the likes of Laura Marling, Mumford and Sons, Noah and the Whale, Matt Corby and Boy & Bear. They then embark on a 12-date Australian National tour throughout December.

2012 has so far has seen The Trouble With Templeton tour with Of Monsters & Men, Julia Stone, Husky and Father John Misty among others, and the band were one of the highlights of Big Sound 2012.
