Live Music Supervision Session: Anatomy of a Scene

#sxsw #MusicSupervision

Selecting the perfect song to soundtrack a moment in a film, TV show or ad goes much farther than simply making a mixtape of pitched potentials. The winning track is at the center of a complex Venn diagram reflecting the overlap of resources, creative concerns and budget. Watch a live music supervision session unfold as 4 film/TV music supervisors discuss their process for culling, pitching or creating songs for a single identical scene. Three participants (licensing rep, publisher & artist) will each present a video demo to a studio music exec - their top song pick edited to the same film clip. Hear real time commentary on the original songs written for this select scene, and the complex vetting process involved.

Tyson McShane Slow Down Molasses

Tyson McShane (Band Leader/Chief Songwriter for Slow Down Molasses) grew up in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, a town where there was precisely one all-ages punk rock concert a year that typically ended in a mini-riot. After moving to the ‘big city’ of Saskatoon for university, McShane immersed himself in that city’s thriving music and arts scene with playing in bands, promoting shows, and hyping the local scene. With his band Slow Down Molasses, Tyson has released two albums and two EPs (a new full-length album mixed by Besnard Lakes’ Jace Lasek is planned for release in 2013) and has toured Canada, the United Kingdom, Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands, playing shows at some of the most exciting new music festivals happening (End of the Road, Sled Island, Reeperbahn, Incubate, NXNE, The Great Escape, Liverpool SoundCity, etc.). Outside of his time with Slow Down Molasses, Tyson plays and records with sludge-pop fuzz merchants Jeans Boots, and weirdo noise-niks The Eyebats, curates Saskatoon’s newest music festival MoSoFest, and secretly/not-so-secretly holds down day job as a City Planner/Urban Designer.
