Startup Health & Wired Present: Beg, Borrow, Steal
So many industries have been turned upside-down and inside-out with new technological innovation. From e-commerce to social media, technology has completely changed the way we live our daily lives. Innovation has changed every facet of the way we do things - from banking on your phone to buying groceries online - but one industry has remained staunchly untouched by technological innovation: health. The state of global health and America's outdated healthcare system must innovate to survive - but we don't need to start from scratch; rather, we don't have time to start from scratch. Innovations created for gaming, social media, e-commerce and other industries can be adapted to health tech and must be adapted quickly if we're going to disrupt healthcare, change every day lives and save our loved ones. Taking examples from Kinect, Transform Health, and others, we'll examine how and why to apply current innovations to disrupt health.
Presenters
Thomas Goetz is a writer and entrepreneur. He is founder of 1+1 Labs, an information-design firm, and author of “The Decision Tree: Taking Control of Your Health in the New Era of Personalized Medicine,” which was chosen by the Wall Street Journal as a Best Health book of 2010. His next book, “The Remedy,” explores the origins of medical science and the race to identify and cure tuberculosis; it comes out the Fall of 2013.
From 2001 through 2012 he steered the ship at WIRED, including four years as executive editor, where he guided the magazine to ample honors, including a dozen National Magazine Awards and, in 2010, being chosen as AdWeek’s “Magazine of the Decade.” His articles for WIRED have covered personal genomics, the controversial metabolic syndrome, the paradox of cancer screening, and the mystery of behavior change. This work has been selected for the Best American Science Writing, Best American Science & Nature Writing, and Best Technology Writing anthologies. His TED talk on redesigning medical data has been viewed more than 300,000 times.
He is currently a senior adviser for the Health Data Consortium. He has served as curator-in-residence for the Adobe Digital Museum, a council member for NASA’s Launch challenge series, and as executive producer of the Discovery Channel program Earth 2050: The Future of Energy.
Goetz holds a Master of Public Health degree from the University of California, Berkeley, and a Master's degree in American literature from the University of Virginia. He graduated from Bates College, where he learned to juggle five balls at once (he’s since back down to three).

Steven was previously co-founder, Chairman, and CEO of Webstakes and Promotions.com, a global online advertising, direct marketing, and technology company. He took the company public on the Nasdaq prior to being acquired by iVillage. In under four years, the company built a membership base exceeding 20 million consumers, raised nearly $100 million, and achieved a $500 million market capitalization. Steven began his online career with Law Journal Extra!, now known as Law.com, the first online legal news and information website, which was acquired by American Lawyer Media.
Steven received his J.D. degree from Widener University School of Law, and B.A. degree from the University of Maryland-College Park. Steven is a member of YPO (Young Presidents’ Organization) Metro New York Chapter and lives in New York City with his wife and three daughters.
