Filmmaking as User Experience Design

The role of the filmmaker has, historically, focused on precision: crafting and controlling the viewer's experience down to the frame. And for good reason — one of the prime pleasures of cinema is surrendering to the vision of the filmmaker.

In contrast, the role of the user experience designer in interactive media — websites, games, apps, etc. — is to facilitate experiences rather than solely dictate them, creating flexible frameworks which allow different people to have a range of experiences in different contexts.
This workshop investigates what filmmakers can learn from the craft of user experience design in order to expand the creative potential of their filmmaking, make creative uses of new technologies in cinematic storytelling, and reach audiences in new ways.


Jason Brush EVP Creative POSSIBLE

Jason Brush is Executive Vice President of Creative & UX at POSSIBLE, WPP’s largest digital agency, where he oversees Creative and User Experience Design in the agency’s Los Angeles branch, and User Experience Design globally. His work has won the Cannes Lions Gold (for Google Art Project), three Interactive Emmys (for and NBC ‘s online broadcast of the Beijing Olympics), and the Industrial Design Society of America’s IDEA Bronze (for Samsung Handset UI), among other awards. Recent projects he has lead include interactive installations for the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, dashboard interfaces for BMW’s forthcoming i-Series vehicles, the redesign of Sony’s PlayStation store UI, and a forthcoming tablet multi-platform app for Disney. Jason teaches at UCLA‘s Department of Film, Television & Digital Media, and at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, and holds an MFA in Film Directing from UCLA.
