Unlocking Energy Data: The Green Button
In early 2012, then-U.S. CTO Aneesh Chopra challenged utilities across the country to develop a “Green Button,” that provides detailed customer usage information available for download in a simple, standard format. Utilities answered the call of the White House, committing to give users access to their data. From charts to graphs to widespread energy-based social games, applications educated and motivated consumers to participate in improving energy efficiency.
This session will recount how the administration leveraged the “power of the pulpit” to compel utilities to open data to their customers. And, it will highlight some of the most compelling use cases that have emerged in the new era of open energy data.
Finally, the session will give a vision of the future of open energy data and inspire application developers to participate in creating new, innovative apps to better connect people and their energy usage.

Justin Segall is the Founder and Executive Vice President of Simple Energy, an energy customer engagement software company based in Boulder, CO. Simple Energy’s Customer Engagement Platform engages utility customers to provide measurable and verifiable results in energy efficiency, smart grid, and demand response / dynamic pricing programs. They do this by providing customers compelling motivation - leveraging leading behavioral science and social game mechanics delivered on the technology platforms people use most - social networks, web, email, and mobile.
Justin brings experience in the energy industry, community engagement, and business development. In addition to strategy and partnerships, Justin manages energy industry and utility partner relationships for Simple Energy. Previously he served as VP of Resource Development for Renewable Choice Energy. Justin led the firm’s trading and origination, executing significant transactions in renewable energy and carbon markets. Previously Justin served in senior roles with the $3 billion Atlanta BeltLine project, the largest, most comprehensive sustainable urban redevelopment project in the U.S. He helped secure project funding and led many early elements of project implementation. Justin graduated cum laude from Duke University where he spearheaded Duke’s path to leadership in sustainability.
