Meet the Insiders: Filmmakers: Documentary
New for 2013, Meet the Insiders is an opportunity to participate in vital discussions on the innovations and developments in the world of film across varying topics. Moderators will start by introducing and getting to know the Insider for the first 10 minutes, but the next 20 are an open forum where the audience is able to ask questions, discuss trends, connect with the film community, and gain insight and understanding of the industry from the insiders at the forefront of their respective fields.
Moderated by documentary filmmaker and UT RTF Chair Paul Stekler, get the inside track from successful documentary filmmakers working today. Hear first hand about their process, first from Al Reinert, director of SXSW 2013 film An Unreal Dream: The Story of Michael Morton and second from Jeanie Finlay, director of SXSW 2013 film The Great Hip Hop Hoax and get the chance to discuss and ask questions about the challenges they've faced as filmmakers and their future plans.

Agnes Varnum joined The Texas Tribune events team after five years in membership and marketing at the Austin Film Society. Before moving to Texas, Agnes held positions with Icarus Films, the Center for Social Media at American University and as a freelance writer for Indiewire.com and Documentary magazine. She has worked on the AFI Fest in LA, Independent Film Week in NYC, and she has served on programming committees for Silverdocs, Newport International Film Festival, AOL True Stories (now Snag Films) and SXSW.
Jeanie Finlay is a British artist and filmmaker who is obsessed with telling other people’s stories.
Her work includes The Great Hip Hop Hoax (92 mins) for BBC Scotland and BBC Storyville, Sound It Out (75 mins) a documentary portrait of the the very last vinyl record shop in Teesside (official film of Record Store Day), feature documentary Goth Cruise for the Independent Film Channel (USA,75 min) which became the most downloaded title ever on IFC, Teenland (BBC4 60 min) which was broadcast on BBC4 to critical acclaim and award winning interactive documentary Home-Maker.
Jeanie was named a “Star of Tomorrow” in Screen International’s prestigious yearly review of new filmmakers, is a director of Nottingham’s flagship cinema and media centre, Broadway
In 2008 she set up Glimmer Films and is currently in co-production on two new feature documentaries with Met Film production – Pantomime and ORION: The man who would be King.
