sleepmakeswaves
sleepmakeswaves are an instrumental (post-)rock band from sydney, australia.
The band came together in late 2006 with a desire to write textured, dynamic and emotive songs combining delicate beauty with dramatic climaxes. After their 2007 demo generated unexpected buzz, they went on to independently finance, produce and distribute 2 further EPs. Strong word of mouth and critical praise saw the band’s listener base grow worldwide, with over 50,000 people downloading their tracks online, attracting airplay on Triple J and notably as far afield as the BBC.
In 2011, the band released their debut studio album “...and so we destroyed everything” through independent label Bird’s Robe Records.
The album is a dramatic showcase for the band: glittering melodic hooks are embossed by lush production and the band’s heaving musicianship. With an array of memorable and climactic sequences, it signals the band’s continued desire to push into new musical territory
After just 1 week of release, the album was the top selling record on Bandcamp worldwide and remains one of the highest selling Australian releases, reflecting their strong underground following.
The singles, a driving melodic anthem titled ‘(HELLO) CLOUD MOUNTAIN,’ and the brooding epic ‘IN LIMBS AND JOINTS,’ have received regular airplay on Australian radio including Triple J, FBi, Edge and RRR. The album was also named ‘Record of the Week’ by KOOP radio (Texas) and Nowlikephotographs. The video for ‘(hello) cloud mountain’ has proved a Youtube hit, also airing on Rage, MTV and Channel V.
sleepmakeswaves’ bold approach to creating innovative instrumental music and their electric live performances have earned them high profile international supports with the likes of Mono, Boris, Pelican, Russian Circles and Unitopia. In 2009 they conducted their first headline tour of Australia, enjoying sold out shows and headlining the Menagerie experimental music festival in Sydney. They have featured on three successive Progfest tours (2008-2010) and have headlined sold out club shows across the country.
sleepmakeswaves will conduct an extensive Australian tour in Feb 2012, before heading to SXSW in March and then Europe for their first international shows in April (including co-headlining the popular Dunk! Festival in Belgium alongside 65daysofstatic and This Will Destroy You), with plans to tour the USA and Asia later in the year.
