In an era of rapid internet development and innovation, banks have been described as technology laggards. This session will explore the future of innovation in banking and the payments industry. There are literally hundreds of large companies and startups in the payment space from Paypal to 1-person startups. The talk will also dive into “new currencies” and payments are emerging such as Facebook credits and other “alternative currencies”. Is there a future for the banking industry or are banks in danger of becoming relics. The session is not about Citigroup nor its business.
Antonio Benjamin is a Managing Director and Global Chief Technology Officer of Institutional Clients Group/Global Transaction Services (GTS), a division of Citi. Mr. Benjamin is also the Chairman of GTS’ Research, Development and Innovation Lab (RDIL) as well as a member of the GTS Executive Committee.
Prior to becoming GTS’ Chief Technology Officer, Mr. Benjamin was a contract CTO for a significant client of Deloitte (Canada) where he provided engagement leadership, technology and business consulting services in the development of a customer loyalty program.
Mr. Benjamin was a Partner at Ernst and Young, LLP where he held several positions including Chief of Strategy and Chief Technology Officer of Security and Technology Services. After Ernst and Young, Mr. Benjamin was a Partner in charge of the Business and Technology Risk Management Group at Computer Sciences Corporation. He was also the Chief Knowledge Officer and Director of Enterprise Security Services at Cambridge Technology Partners Management Labs. He started his technology career as an engineer at Lotus Development Corporation.
Mr. Benjamin founded the e-commerce company, GoodStorm.com, which was acquired by Zazzle.com, a Kleiner Perkins company. At Zazzle, which is the leading on-demand retail platform for major brands, Mr. Benjamin was the Senior Vice President in charge of Business Development and the Brand President for GoodStorm@Zazzle,
Mr. Benjamin earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of the Philippines. He sits on the Board of Trustees for the University of California at Merced. He is fluent in English, Filipino, Thai, Lao, and Spanish. His current interests include algorithmically curated software, user data theories and models, analytics software, social economic ecosystems and social network business models.
