Anne Richardson

Chief
Rappahannock Tribe

Chief Anne Richardson has served as Chief of the Rappahannock Tribe since 1998, the first woman Chief to lead a Tribe in Virginia since the 1700s. As a fourth-generation chief in her family, she brings to her position a long legacy of community leadership and service. Chief Anne has led the Rappahannock Tribe to reacquire their ancestral lands as part of returning her Tribe to the great Rappahannock River Valley. That effort has helped to protect critical habitat for eagles and waterfowl in the area wildlife refuge and along the Chesapeake Trail. She is also leading the establishment of the Indigenous Conservation Council for the Chesapeake Bay, a nonprofit organization whose inaugural board members are the chiefs of the seven federally recognized tribes in Virginia.
