Nelya Melnitchouk

Dr. Nelya Melnitchouk, MD, an oncology surgeon at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, is working to shore up trauma and cancer care in her native Ukraine, where Russia’s invasion has disrupted health care at every level. The U.S.-based nonprofit she co-founded with her husband in 2017, the Global Medical Knowledge Alliance, is sending surgical and medical supplies to hospitals in Ukraine and sharing online training content. It also developed a mobile app, HealUA, that Ukrainian physicians can use to consult with peers outside the country. Melnitchouk’s other efforts have included co-creating educational videos for Ukrainian civilians on treating traumatic injuries and collaborating with the National Cancer Institute of Ukraine on guidelines for cancer care during wartime.
